Helping youth get on the right track with God's Word
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us." We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish.” Hebrews 12:1-2 NLT |
Connecting the Church with youth through Pen-pals for mentoring
Paul instructed Timothy to find those who were faithful and to disciple (Mentor) others: "You have heard me teach many things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Teach these great truths to trustworthy people who are able to pass them on to others.” II Timothy 2:2 NLT |
New Start Ministries is an Alabama nonprofit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization formed to help adjudicated youth make a NEW START in life. We provide information and assistance to willing youth who want to be connected with a local church for Christian mentoring.
Where the Problem Starts
Some of our state’s youth make bad choices and are sentenced by juvenile courts to the Alabama Department of Youth Services (DYS).
While in DYS
Youth have opportunities to make changes to turn away from crime and delinquency. Many people want to see youth in DYS succeed in turning their lives around.
The Disappointment
Once released, some youth return to their old ways and get back in trouble. Some even return to DYS.
One Possible Reason
There are a lot of reasons youth get back in trouble. One reason might be not finding a church to encourage them or help them get involved in positive youth activities.
A Testimonial
A recent statement from an adult who was once in DYS, but is now in church, “If only I had had someone to encourage me to get into church when I first got out of DYS, I could have AVOIDED GOING TO PRISON and having SO MANY BAD THINGS HAPPEN to me.” D.G.
Working Towards A Solution
Church is not the only answer, but it should be a part of the solution!
We have Partnered with The Alabama Department of Youth Services
The Alabama Department Youth Services is allowing New Start Ministries to meet with any youth who volunteers for assistance in finding a church in their local community to help them. (For more on The Alabama Department Youth Services click here)
We have Partnered with Mentor Alabama
We are a participating mentoring organization with Mentor Alabama .
According to the National Mentoring Partnership, mentored teens are:
46% less likely to get into drugs
59% more likely to get better-grades
73% more likely to raise their goals
Mentoring reduces recidivism up to 80% (Prison Fellowship study)
We are Seeking to Partner With Alabama Churches
New Start Ministries locates churches in the youth’s community that are willing to extend the love of Christ through Christian mentoring to a youth that wants their help.
Advancing The President’s Faith-Based and Community Initiative
Until now there has been no statewide effort to involve the Christian church in reaching out to disciple youth returning home from rehabilitation facilities.
New Start Ministries is promoting the President’s Faith-Based initiative by giving Alabama Churches opportunities to make a difference in the lives of youth who want their help to make a new start in life. (For more on the President's faith-based and community initiatives click here)
